A lightweight, strong and simplistic folding bicycle perfect for the commuter.

The single speed Dahon Speed Uno folding bicycle is the newer (and slightly heavier) version of the popular urban commuter single speed bicycle, the Mu Uno. The Speed Uno comes in at 24lbs (10.9 kg) and is one of Dahon’s lightest folding bikes. Weight is kept to an absolute minimum by using an old school rear coaster brake which allows you to slow the bike by pedalling backwards. The removal of all unsightly brake levers, gear shifters or cables means that it’s not only easier to fold up but there is very little ongoing maintenance required for the bike.

Dahon Magnetix

Dahon Magnetix

Little touches go a LONG way with the Speed Uno, one noticeable addition is the magnetic latching system (Dahon Magnetix) which holds the bike together when folded. It’s not immediately apparent how convenient this little feature is but when you’re using the bike every day you’ll soon grow to love it. Another great feature is Dahon’s DoubleLok system ensures that every latch that holds the bike together has a secondary locking mechanism to ensure utmost safety.

It’s also worth noting that the Dahon Speed Uno is one of the top-selling folding bikes in the USA.

Our Speed Uno Review

What’s the best folding bike? The Dahon Speed Uno is currently ranked #3 in our Top 10 Best Folding Bikes.

As we’ve come to expect from Dahon bikes, the build quality is generally very high throughout, the Speed Uno is no exception to this rule.

The matt black frame of the Speed Uno is constructed from K Series – Superlite – 4130 Chromoly which is 60% stronger than high tensile steel, and on first impressions appears to be very strong. When in use you can feel the stiffness of the frame which helps put your mind at ease; we believe the noticeable stiffness and stability of the frame is largely due to Dahon’s DoubleLok system which firmly locks the hinge sections of the frame.

chain guard adds extra protection against getting oil on your clothes, but this is at the expense of some additional noise you will hear when cycling. It’s not a lot of additional noise and if cycling in traffic you can’t hear it but noticeable when otherwise quiet outside.

It’s important to note that the Speed Uno is a single speed bike and not a fixed-speed bike which means that you can still coast without pedalling.

The Dahon Rotolo Tyre on the Speed Uno

The Dahon Rotolo Tyre on the Speed Uno

The Dahon Rotolo (20″ x 1.50″), high pressure, 65 psi tyres of the Speed Uno are very large and can absorb the shock of going through pot-holes and up kerbs with ease which makes them ideal for city commuting. The larger wheels also allow you to pick up a little more top-end speed than other folding bikes and increases the ride stability which in turn makes the bike a lot easier to control, all in all, the ride is very smooth.

The rear coaster brake is the only brake on the Speed Uno and whilst it’s a good design feature it does take some getting used to and it’s definitely not as powerful as independent brakes front and back which means that you need to allow for more stopping distance. Because the coaster brake is situated on the rear, if you apply too much braking power you can also send the bike into a skid which further reduces the stopping power. With this being said, the rear brake is adequate for most day to day cycling and once you get used to how it works, you naturally adapt quickly to leaving more space in front of you. If you’re worried about safety and curious about the performance of a coaster brake in comparison to the other more common types of brakes I would recommend reading the discussion on Stack Exchange – What is safer…coaster brakes, regular brakes, or fixed gear braking?

UPDATE: There is also a good post and 112 comments on coaster brakes here on Lovely Bicycle! blog and further reading specifically on which bicycle brakes to get on Sheldon Browns blog, Bicycle Brake Choices.

Cycling up hills can be an issue with the Speed Uno as it only has one gear.

How to fold the Dahon Speed Uno

How to fold the Dahon Speed Uno

The bike and pedals can be folded quickly, with a little bit of practice you can fold the bike in under 10 seconds. The folded size of the Dahon Speed Uno is 11.7″ x 30″ x 25″ ( 29.7 x 76.2 x 63.5cm ).

You can compare weights and total folding size of all the folding bikes we’ve reviewed and sort them accordingly over on our Best Folding Bikes Table page.

Unlike the Dahon Speed D7, the handlebar post of the Speed Uno is not adjustable. However, you can adjust the height of the seat post which means that the bike can accommodate riders up to 6’4″ though I’d personally not recommended it for anyone over 6’2″ else you’ll have an extremely aggressive riding position due to the non-adjustable handlebars.

The Suntour folding and non-slip pedals are unfortunately made of plastic and seem to be the weak point of the bike. A common complaint about the pedals is the poor quality bearing system, the plastic construction which is easily broken and the fact that the pedals can not be taken apart.

Additional features of the Speed Uno

  • Sturdy aluminium kickstand
  • The bike is free-standing when folded and rests in a tripod fashion using the two wheels and the bottom of the seat-post in the middle
  • Beautiful matt black finish with reflectors to make the bike easily visible at night

There is a basic 1-year warranty with the Dahon Speed Uno with an optional 3 or 5-year upgrade. Download the latest warranty information here.

The Dahon Speed Uno Test Ride

A friend and I took the Dahon Speed Uno out on a short test ride near round where we live and we had a good amount of fun whilst out riding it.

The bike handled well, it was stable and easy to adapt to the different braking system. The frame was stiff and everything seemed solid. I especially liked the large tires which led to a very smooth ride, this was most noticeable when going over small pot-holes in the road.

The overall quality of the Dahon Speed Uno was very high but as outlined earlier in the review, the folding plastic pedals do seem to be lacking in quality which is a shame given the quality of the rest of the bike. We hope that Dahon can sort this in the coming months.

Unfolding and setup took about 20 seconds but in a rush and with a bit of practice you could get this down to 10 seconds. The magnetic latching mechanisms are strong and keep the bike together well when folded.

The seat is comfortable and perfect for commuting to work.

We did attempt some larger hills and whilst we did make it up to the top, it was a LOT of effort as you can imagine from any single speed bike. Smaller hills are no problem for the Speed Uno.

All in all, we were very impressed with the speed uno and would highly recommend it to anyone not looking to tackle big hills. If Dahon can sort out the pedals then you’ve got a fantastic bike, until then I’m going to have to give it a B+ or 8.5/10. Still a great bike.

Highly Recommended Upgrades

With a couple of low-cost upgrades you can convert the Dahon Speed Uno into a great folding bicycle and enjoy a much nicer riding experience. My personal essential upgrades:
